The city is built on a collection of 118 little islands in the centre of the Venetian Lagoon and is crossed by 178 canals which are connected by over 400 bridges.
Venice is divided into 6 districts, called "sestiere". These are Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Marco and Castello.
Built on water because the mainland inhabitants came to look for a refuge during the barbaric invasions, in the 5th century d.C. Its fundation is made of countless wooden piles that have been holding the weight of Venetian palaces for centuries.
The piles most probably made of English oak and chestnut are in use also to sign the canals, to drive boats on navigation since they have to follow the lines traced by piles. A white paint on them indicates the pole side where navigate.
Over time Venice became the center of trades between East and West and spent centuries of great glory. The Republic of Venice was called Serenissima due to the balanced and democratic way through political affairs and justice were administered.
